Animals
Approximately 8,500 animals live in the zoo. There are more than 700 animal species in the zoo (including invertebrates such as ants, spiders, jelly fish etc.).
There is no guarantee that you will see all the animals during your visit. The best time is in the morning, as many species are early risers and more active in the mornings.
An important factor of good zoo animal husbandry is that the animals have, just as in their natural habitat, an area they can retreat to. Should you not see an animal straight away, don`t forget that many occupy both an indoor and outdoor area which are connected to each other, so be sure to check both places.
Our petting zoo, close to the large adventure playground, offers kids the possibility to stroke miniature goats and sheep although these may also want to withdraw into their retreats.
There are special adventure vouchers for certain animal species, where you have the possibility of getting in close contact. But this is not offered for all animals. Further information about adventure vouchers here
You can pick up your free plan of the zoo at the ticket offices or at one of the folder racks in the zoo. It shows where to find which animals, their feeding times and useful information about the infrastructure. You can also download the plan here.
There are daily feeding sessions at the zoo which are open to the public. Feeding schedule
Please bear in mind that the feedings may sometimes be cancelled at short notice due to internal reasons. Thank you for your understanding.*currently not available

General information about the zoo
The zoo is owned by the Federal Republic of Austria. On January 1st 1992 the “Schönbrunner Tiergarten Gesellschaft m.b.H.” was founded and outsourced from the federal administration. Since January 1st 2020 Dr. Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck has been the sole managing director of this company. There is a supervisory board, an advisory board for zoo biology, zoology, and ecology as well as a support committee.
The total area of the zoo is 17 hectares. It lies in the middle of the 160 hectare Schönbrunner Schlosspark (Palace Gardens). Together with the Palace of Schönbrunn and its gardens the zoo belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Schönbrunn.
Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest zoo in the world. In 1752 Emperor Franz I, Stephan von Lothringen, the husband of Maria Theresia had a menagerie built around a central pavilion. Originally his menagerie of “rare animals” was reserved to the imperial family and noble guests. From the year 1778 it was also opened on Sundays for all “decently dressed persons”.
Today, Schönbrunn Zoo with its more than 2 million visitors yearly, has become a much-liked local recreation area and attraction for Vienna-tourists from all over the world. Over the last 260 years of its history, the zoo has changed from the Emperor`s menagerie to one of the most modern and beautiful zoos in the world but the imperial flair can still be felt today. The interaction of historical elements and modern technology give the zoo its special charm.
Approximately 7,000 animals live in the zoo. There are around 600 animal species in the zoo (including invertebrates such as ants, spiders, jelly fish etc.).
Approximately 90 keepers look after our animals. In total the zoo has on a yearly average approx. 259 employees, which represents 203 full-time equivalents.
